How to play

- Keep moving. Linger anywhere and the dust rolling up from behind swallows you. Pomegranates on the way are worth two points each.

From the Pink City to the lake
The city you are crossing is called the Pink City for a reason: under Alexander Tamanyan’s 1924 plan, Yerevan was rebuilt in rose tuff — volcanic stone that comes out of Armenian ground pink — and whole avenues still glow warm at sunset. It is an old place to be in a hurry: founded as the Erebuni fortress in 782 BC, Yerevan is older than Rome. The vans hunting you between the facades are marshrutkas — the fixed-route minibuses that carry half the city to work.
Past the last kiosk the vineyards begin. Armenians have pressed grapes for a very long time: in the Areni-1 cave, wine was fermented in clay vats about 6,100 years ago — the oldest known winery on earth. And then the water: Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in Eurasia, nearly 1,900 meters up. The boats you hop belong to fishermen after the ishkhan — the “prince” trout found nowhere else on earth — and the silhouette on the far shore is Sevanavank, the ninth-century monastery on the peninsula.

Why a rooster?
Because “why did the chicken cross the road?” is the oldest crossing joke there is — this one just crosses a whole city, vineyards and a lake included.
